Rory McIlroy made a remarkable run up the Masters leaderboard on Saturday with a historic start to the third round.

McIlroy came out scorching hot on Saturday at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. He posted a three on the first six holes, a stretch that included three birdies and an eagle.

That made McIlroy the first player in Masters history to start a round with six consecutive threes.

The highlight of McIlroy’s run was unquestionably his chip-in eagle on the par-5 2nd. The shot moved him alone atop the leaderboard.

The run left McIlroy with a three-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau. His streak finally ended when he shot a four on the par-4 7th, but all that did was maintain the lead he had built for himself.

McIlroy gave something of a preview of this on Friday when he took a risk, and it paid off for him. Everything he is doing seems to be working for him, and he looks like a real threat to win the elusive tournament for the first time in his career.
