Multiple stories previously touched upon how Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni and his staff taking "their share of responsibility for" the team's 2-2 start to the 2024 campaign during Philadelphia's Week 5 bye changed the fortunes for what became the Super Bowl LIX champions.
During the latest edition of the "Exciting Mics" podcast hosted by Eagles defensive backs Reed Blankenship and Cooper DeJean, Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley expanded on what changed for the 2024 Eagles after they lost two of their first four games.
"I think we all just bought in," Barkley said, as shared by Nick Shook of the NFL's website. "You hear the outside noise and expectation. We didn't care how it looked. The only thing we cared about was winning football games. When you have the talent and skill that we have on our team mixed with the coaches, we all play together like how we played, teams really stood no chance. You've seen that in the playoffs. You've seen that in the Super Bowl. ...It wasn't even really a game."
The Eagles undeniably benefited from the fact that Barkley recorded a league-best 2,283 yards from scrimmage during the regular season en route to becoming the Offensive Player of the Year. Thanks largely to his efforts, Philadelphia suffered only one loss — a 36-33 Week 16 defeat against the Washington Commanders — from Week 6 through Super Bowl Sunday.
As Barkley noted during the podcast, the Eagles also had a "dominant" defense. Per ESPN stats, Philadelphia ended the regular season ranked first in the league in total defense (278.4 yards allowed per game) and second in points allowed per contest (17.8).
Additionally, Sirianni and Co. did well to handle wide receiver A.J. Brown and quarterback Jalen Hurts dealing with issues regarding their relationship during the season. In the end, everybody involved put such drama behind them before Hurts earned Super Bowl Most Valuable Player honors for his performance in Philadelphia's blowout 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
"I really think when we look back on it in 10 to 15 years, and we're all old and we're reflecting on our glory days – hopefully next year, the year we're in right now -- but the year that we had last year, people don't give us enough credit," Barkley added during the podcast while explaining why he thinks the 2024 Eagles are "a top-five team of all time."
He likely cares little about responses to that opinion, as he'll forever have a Super Bowl title on his career resume.
