The Colorado Rockies are off to a terrible, no good, start

It has been a rough go for the Colorado Rockies, who dropped another one on Thursday.

It was a 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies that dropped the Rockies to 8-42 on the season. According to ESPN, this is the worst start by any team in the modern era of baseball (which goes all the way back to 1901) and the Rockies are on pace to lose 136 games this season.

To put that in perspective, the Chicago White Sox were historically bad last season, losing 121 games. That was a modern era record for most losses in a season.

If the Rockies stayed on this pace, that would make them 15 games worse than the 2024 White Sox, which is a truly putrid thought.

Starting pitcher German Marquez gave the Rockies a fighting chance to win on Thursday, pitching seven innings and giving up just one earned run. He allowed just four hits and struck out five, though he did walk two.

Despite his efforts he fell to 1-7 on the season. Even so, he's trying to stay positive.

"I feel like every day is our day, and we have to go out there and do the best to win," Marquez said after the game. "I feel we need to be together, and I feel we're closer to that point."

Being together is one thing. Winning games is another. The Rockies have now lost five in a row and 17 out of their last 19.

They may feel closer to playing together, but that's only done so much for this awful team.
