Matheus Cunha must be the start of Manchester United's rebuild

Manchester United's disastrous season is finally over. Ruben Amorim and his squad are already on the road, having touched down in Kuala Lumpur for their money-spinning postseason tour.

Despite the squad being on the other side of the world, United's transfer team appears to have gotten an early jump on its summer business. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, United is closing in on the £62.5 million ($84.6 million) signing of Matheus Cunha from the Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"Verbal agreement in place between all parties involved. Cunha will sign deal until June 2030 with option until 2031," Romano reported on Monday. "Wolves to receive £62.5m clause value in installments. Formal steps/contracts to be checked next week."

Cunha is exactly the type of player United needs. He's positionally versatile, highly athletic and a proven commodity in the Premier League. As such, he should hit the ground running and provide goals and assists from Day 1. Most importantly, though, he fits Amorim's system and will slot into one of the two No. 10 roles.

Adding Cunha is a statement of intent from United. Sir Jim Ratcliffe will know he needs to back Amorim after throwing him in the deep end earlier this season. Still, Cunha cannot be the only addition to the playing squad this summer. Instead, his addition must act as a catalyst for a summer of change.

Amorim needs another No. 10, a striker, a goalkeeper, a defensive midfielder and likely a right wing-back. Granted, he won't get all of those players in the coming months, and the team must sell before it buys. Still, at least there's a clear blueprint for rebuilding the fallen giant.

United fans have endured multiple false dawns in recent years. Hopefully, under Amorim and Ratcliffe, this time will be different. The signing of Cunha shows a clear strategy, and at least that gives everyone reason to be excited.
