Manchester United missed out on $135.4 million when they lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League Final. Ruben Amorim will therefore have a smaller transfer fund to try and rebuild a squad he previously called "maybe the worst in Manchester United's history."
According to a report by The Daily Mail, Alejandro Garnacho has been informed to find himself a new club. The English newspaper reported that United will seek a transfer in the region of $94.8 million (£70 million) for his services.
"United rejected an offer from Napoli for the Argentina winger in January but could listen to offers of between £60m and £70m this summer," The Daily Mail reported.
Garnacho will join a long list of talent on United's transfer list. Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Casemiro are among the leading candidates to be shown the exit door.
Nevertheless, selling Garnacho would give Amorim some much-needed wiggle room in the transfer market. As a homegrown talent, his sale would represent 100% profit under the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. A Rashford sale would also fall under the same umbrella.
Moving both wingers would ensure Amorim has the funds to begin creating a team in his image. Garnacho, while talented, has repeatedly shown an immaturity and petulance when things don't go his way. He also plays a position that doesn't exist within Amorim's system. The former Sporting Lisbon manager prefers two No. 10's, rather than playing with wingers.
Garnacho's attitude is a symptom of United's decline. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, players would never get away with airing their frustrations in public. Nor could they exude such negative body language. Amorim will be keen to instill a more competitive and professional spirit within his squad. It's part of the reason Rashford was exiled in January.
Selling Garnacho (and potentially Rashford) will hurt United. They're a team steeped in tradition of developing young and exciting players. However, it's a necessary move. Not only for the funds their exits will generate, but for the culture reset it will represent.
United appear ready to stick with Amorim for the long term. So, now is the perfect time to let him build out his blueprint. He needs significant funds for that to happen. Fortunately, United can generate those funds in the transfer market. We should expect a busy summer on the red side of Manchester.
