NASCAR legend shares his thoughts on Kyle Larson after another failed attempt at the 'Double'

Kyle Larson competed in both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, but his hopes of running all 1,100 miles were dashed for the second year in a row.

A crash on Lap 92 of the Indy 500 ended his hopes early in "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." He was eventually credited with a 24th-place finish after the cars of Marcus Ericsson, Kyle Kirkwood and Callum Ilott were penalized on Monday.

Fast forward to Charlotte, Larson led 34 laps early, but ultimately finished 37th after getting caught up in a multi-car wreck on Lap 244, leaving him with a pair of DNFs and another frustrating end to his "Double" attempt.

This comes one year after a weather delay at the Indy 500 kept Larson from starting the Coca-Cola 600 on time. Once he arrived at Charlotte, the same weather system had reached NASCAR's longest race and Larson never had a chance to strap into his Cup car.

Larson said he would like to run the Indy 500 again, but feels the logistics of the "Double" are "too tough."

Seven-time champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jimmie Johnson made an appearance on NASCAR's "Inside the Race" and offered his take on Larson's "Double" attempts.

"I love that he's doing it and I hope that he sticks with it," Johnson said. "The uptick for motorsport s worldwide is measurable. When people do the 'Double,' it matters. And Kyle's the guy that can drive anything as we know."

As for those who are opposed to Larson attempting the "Double," Johnson shared these thoughts.

"The loudest people in this argument are either not fans of his or really don't appreciate the level of sportsmanship or sportsman that's in this to try and pull this off... He's a special talent."

While Johnson never attempted to complete both races in the same day, he has made starts in both races, so the appreciation for what it takes to prepare and compete in them is not lost on the seven-time Cup Series champion.

Whether Larson or someone else attempts both races in the future, it is a remarkable undertaking that has only had one driver (Tony Stewart, 2001) complete all 1,100 miles.

It is a tall task for anyone, and that was on full display with Larson's struggles this past weekend. The praise from Johnson, though, proves how difficult the "Double" truly is and why someone as talented as Larson had trouble completing it once again.

Astros Facing Jose Altuve Decision After Yordan Alvarez Update

The Houston Astros (72–58) are on pace to make the postseason for the ninth consecutive season, entering Sunday with a three-game lead in the AL West. A huge reason for the team’s success has once again been the face of the franchise, Jose Altuve. The 35-year-old veteran has been a driving force in the offense, posting a .278 batting average, .341 on-base percentage, .801 OPS, 22 home runs, and 64 RBIs across 126 games. His durability has been crucial for an Astros team that’s dealt with injuries to several key players—most notably left-handed slugger Yordan Alvarez, who’s been sidelined since May 2 with a fractured right hand. Yordan Alvarez Could Rejoin Astros During Upcoming Homestand On Sunday, an update surfaced on Alvarez’s potential return after he began his rehab assignment earlier this week. Manager Joe Espada announced that Alvarez could rejoin the big-league roster during the team’s upcoming homestand beginning Tuesday. "Presuming Yordan Alvarez comes out of today’s Double-A game feeling good, there is a “strong possibility” he rejoins the Astros during their homestand that starts on Tuesday, Joe Espada said," wrote The Athletic's Chandler Rome. Alvarez’s Return Creates Lineup Dilemma for Joe Espada This comes at a pivotal time for Houston, as they prepare for a playoff push and look to reinsert one of the most feared hitters in the league. Alvarez, a three-time All-Star, has gone 5-for-8 with three doubles and two walks in his first two rehab games for Double-A Corpus Christi. However, with Altuve primarily handling DH duties in Alvarez’s absence, Espada will need to decide who returns to the field full-time. Alvarez was already a defensive liability before the injury, making it unlikely he’ll see regular starts in left field. That would force Altuve back to second base full-time, which could be taxing on the aging veteran and potentially impact his offensive production. It would also push trade deadline acquisition Ramon Urias out of his current infield role, creating a ripple effect across the lineup. Alvarez’s return will undoubtedly inject power back into the Astros’ offense, but it also presents a challenge for Espada as he balances health, defense, and lineup continuity heading into October.

Giants to waive fan favorite QB

Giants to waive fan favorite QB

The Giants’ trio of new quarterbacks has pushed Tommy DeVito off the roster. New York is moving on, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. DeVito has made 12 appearances and eight starts across the past two seasons, but the Giants’ actions this offseason led to the expectation he would wind up on the wrong side of the roster bubble. New York added Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency before selecting Jaxson Dart in the first round of the draft. Each of those three signal-callers will be on the team’s 53-man roster, Dianna Russini of The Athletic confirms. DeVito’s showings during his regular season appearances as well as New York’s preseason finale last Thursday could make him an attractive option on the waiver wire. Teams will be able to put in a claim through Wednesday, the first day in which practice squads will be formed. If DeVito, 27, passes through waivers, he will become a free agent. As NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo notes, DeVito was the subject of trade talks in recent days. Winston has also been the target of a potential deal, but the Giants are prepared to move forward with the former No. 1 pick in a depth capacity. Wilson will handle starting duties to begin the year with Dart looming as a potential replacement depending on how the early portion of the campaign shakes out. This time of year often brings about shuffling at the QB position, and it will be interesting to see how strong DeVito’s market turns out to be. The Raiders found themselves in need of an addition, but their vacancy was filled with the Kenny Pickett trade. The Patriots, meanwhile, have only two passers in the organization at the moment. New England thus represents a candidate for a waiver claim or a free agent push in the event DeVito hits the market.

Chicago Bears waive wide receiver who was 2025 training camp favorite

Chicago Bears waive wide receiver who was 2025 training camp favorite

The Chicago Bears took another big step toward slashing their roster to the final 53-man squad on Tuesday morning. According to team insider Brad Biggs, the Bears have waived training camp favorite J.P. Richardson, and undrafted rookie wide reciever from TCU. Poles also cut ties with offensive lineman Ricky Stromberg, a former third-round pick who some presumed would offer interior line depth at the time he was added. The Chicago Bears were 20 roster moves away from the 53-man limit before these two transactions. Richardson made an early impression at Bears training camp and emerged as the summer's fan-favorite in late-July. His momentum cooled quite a bit once the preseason schedule rolled around, and with so much depth at receiver on Chicago's roster, Richardson's chances never seemed strong. There is, however, a possibility he returns to the Bears on the practice squad. It's highly unlikely another team will put a waiver claim in for him (it guarantees an active roster spot). Once Richardson clears waivers, he's a name to monitor for Chicago's practice team. Richardson finished the 2024 season with 57 catches for 733 yards and two touchdowns for the Horned Frogs.

Bengals' Trey Hendrickson gets huge payday to end his holdout

The Cincinnati Bengals and pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson have finally sorted out an agreement that will end his holdout. In the end, Hendrickson did not get a new long-term contract with the Bengals. However, the team is increasing his salary by $14 million for 2025, and he will now get $30 million this season. Ultimately, Hendrickson does not get the long-term security he had hoped for. Instead, his salary is nearly doubled, and he will still have the opportunity to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025 campaign. Hendrickson’s new deal ends a saga that has taken up most of Cincinnati’s offseason. The team had been reluctant to offer the star pass-rusher any significant guarantees beyond 2025, which was a major sticking point in talks. That is likely why the two sides ultimately pursued a one-year compromise option. The veteran reported to training camp but did not participate without a new contract, and at one point, the Bengals did appear to consider trading him. The asking price was high, however, and it does not appear that a deal ever got close. The 30-year-old Hendrickson was a first-team All-Pro last season and finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting. He has 35 sacks over the past two seasons, which was the most in the NFL during that span. Hendrickson had 17.5 sacks each season.
