Bryce Huff trade is final nail in rare Eagles whiff

The trade is the final chapter of a rare whiff from Eagles general manager Howie Roseman.

Last offseason, Philadelphia signed Huff to a three-year, $51.1M contract after the 2020 undrafted free agent spent his first four seasons with the New York Jets.

In his lone season with the Eagles, Huff appeared in 12 games (six starts) and had 2.5 sacks. He didn't play meaningful snaps in the playoffs and was inactive for the team's 40-22 Super Bowl LIX romp over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Huff landed his sizable contract on the strength of his 2023 season, when he had a career-high 10 sacks. In his four other seasons, he's combined for 10 sacks.

Most teams would rue such a miscalculation of resources, but the Eagles aren't most teams. They didn't miss Huff at all in the Super Bowl. Philadelphia consistently badgered Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was sacked six times, a playoff career-high.

As bad as the Huff signing was, Roseman made up for it by also adding running back Saquon Barkley last offseason. That worked much better, with Barkley earning Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year honors after leading the league in rushing (2,005 yards). He added 499 yards and five touchdowns on 91 attempts (5.5 yards per carry) during the playoffs.

The Huff trade is a reminder that even the best front offices make mistakes. But at least by agreeing to a deal with the Niners, the Eagles got something for their troubles. It might not be much, but it's better than nothing, which is only slightly less than what Huff gave them.
