Trading Zion Williamson has to be a priority for the Pelicans

It's safe to say that the Zion Williamson experience has been a failure for the New Orleans Pelicans. You can't fault the franchise, though. They've remained patient and tried multiple different approaches to make things work.

Unfortunately, Williamson's injury issues, off-court drama and lack of commitment to the franchise have all played a role in the Pelicans being no closer to a championship than they were when they drafted him.

Now, it appears that Joe Dumars is ready to cut ties with the former internet sensation.

“I’ve just been texting random executives across the league,” Pelicans analyst Shamit Dua said via his "The N.O." podcast. “I was like, this is straight off asking people, like, would anyone touch Zion with a 10-foot pole? And there seems to be this general idea of like you kind of saw it with with like Derrick Rose and Kristaps Porzingis that like there will be teams that do not necessarily care about the reputation provided they have enough general information to know that this is going to get settled out of court and the allegations won’t stick.”

New Orleans is past the point where it could ask for a haul in a potential Williamson trade. However, it must accept that parting ways with the explosive forward is best for both parties.

As long as Williamson remains a part of the Pelicans roster, Dumars must try to build a team around his skill set. For all of Williamson's flaws, he's still an elite talent when healthy. As such, New Orleans' best shot at a roster reset will come from parting ways with its former No. 1 overall draft pick. In truth, the potential return for his services isn't important.

The only thing that should matter to the Pelicans is getting a clean break. And if that means embracing some regression in the short term, then so be it.

After all, it's not like they've been setting any records with Williamson leading the way.
