J.T. Realmuto took an ugly shot during Wednesday’s game.
The Philadelphia Phillies catcher was behind the plate for the team’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario. During the bottom of the ninth inning with the score tied at 1-1, Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette was up to bat and promptly delivered an unintentional (but no less forgiving) shot to Realmuto’s nuts.
Bichette barely nicked a 94 mph fastball offering from Philadelphia’s Jordan Romano, sending the baseball straight into Realmuto’s groin. Here is the video of the play.

The cup probably wasn’t very much help there for the three-time All-Star Realmuto. Realmuto immediately had to leave the game and could barely walk as he made his way off the field. He was replaced at catcher by Rafael Marchan, who finished the rest of Bichette’s at-bat (as well as the rest of the game).
The Blue Jays went on to win via walkoff just three batters later. While Bichette ended up fouling out, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with a single, stole second base and scored the winning run on a two-out single by Alejandro Kirk.

Meanwhile, Realmuto, who is in his 12th MLB season, is no stranger to these kinds of painful moments.
