Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones may have improved his odds of earning the starting quarterback gig following incumbent starter Anthony Richardson's concerning injury update.
Per the team's official social media account, Richardson (shoulder), the No. 4 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, won't participate during the team's minicamp, which begins on Tuesday and runs through June 12.

Earlier this offseason, the Colts added Jones as competition for Richardson in a battle for the QB1 role. With Richardson not taking snaps at minicamp, Jones will have more reps to connect with the team's skill-position players and learn the offensive system. It could be what he needs to overtake Richardson on the depth chart.
Injuries have been a concern for Richardson during his first two seasons; he's missed 17 games due to injury (plus two more after being benched last November for Joe Flacco), including season-ending shoulder surgery as a rookie.
Missing minicamp might not be a big deal for most players, but Richardson needs as many reps as he can get.
He's failed to justify his draft position through two seasons. In 2024, Richardson had an unsightly 47.7 percent completion percentage and threw eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Richardson certainly can't afford to miss practice opportunities based on his prior production. It's doubly concerning that his shoulder setback occurred while in a quarterback battle.
He could come back fully healthy in training camp and cement himself as QB1, but the chances of Richardson beginning 2025 on the bench have increased.
Jones, who spent portions of the 2024 season with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings, can begin to distance himself in the competition next week.
