Wings struggling while searching for their identity

If the Dallas Wings are going to turn around their disastrous start to the 2025 season, they must find an identity, commit to a style of play and simply get healthy.

Add in the fact that star guard and rookie sensation Paige Bueckers has missed the last two games with a concussion and will not play in Friday's game at home against the Los Angeles Sparks, and it’s easy to see why many fans in Wings Nation are hitting the panic button only three weeks into the season.

Chris Koclanes must pick a style of play

After being a very strong offensive team for the last couple of seasons, it’s very hard to tell what type of style the Wings are going to play in 2025. They have shown flashes of being a solid team that can be a problem by getting the ball up and down, along with being a team that can rely on their defense and consistently get stops.

“We got to find a tempo that we can be successful at and this was our first game out without a true point guard, so it felt a little clunky at times,” Wing head coach Chris Koclanes said after a recent loss to the Chicago Sky.

If Koclanes had his way, the Wings would be the team that played elite defense and consistently beat teams by slowing down the best offenses of the WNBA, as he’s a big defensive coach at heart. Unfortunately for him and the Wings, this roster doesn’t have the talent to consistently win that way as they always seem to have a quarter where they get outscored by double digit points and let the game get away from them which is one of the many reasons they sit at 1-7 with the worst record in the league heading into Friday's game.

Through eight games, Dallas has allowed 30 points or more in a quarter four times and has been outscored by double figures in three of those four quarters. The Wings have been outscored by double figures six times in 32 total quarters, which is a major recipe for disaster.

Also, despite her immense talent and the ability to play in any system, it’s very easy to see that the only way we are going to see the best version of Bueckers is for her to play in an up-tempo system. This would allow her to be more aggressive offensively while giving her more opportunities to leave her imprint on games.

At the end of the day, the Wings are a work in progress with a bright future, but are in the midst of taking their lumps in this full rebuild of a season.

Sophie Cunningham discusses Bria Hartley after suffering season-ending injury

The Indiana Fever announced devastating news on Tuesday, revealing that two-way guard Sophie Cunningham has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a torn MCL. The injury occurred during the Fever’s matchup against the Connecticut Sun over the weekend. Cunningham went down while rotating over on help defense, as Sun guard Bria Hartley drove baseline and ultimately fell into Cunningham’s knee while trying to pass out of a double-team. Cunningham immediately hit the floor in visible pain. While driving and kicking is a routine basketball play, some fans felt Hartley’s move came off as dirty and could have been avoided. Cunningham, however, addressed the situation on her podcast "Show Me Something," which dropped shortly after the season-ending injury news. Sophie Cunningham opens up about injury Sophie Cunningham revealed that she’s actually friends with Bria Hartley and doesn’t believe Hartley would ever try to hurt her intentionally. In fact, she admitted she even told her mom to delete a tweet that was directed at Hartley in the heat of the moment on Sunday. "I know Bria, and I'm actually really good friends with Bria," Cunningham said. "I think it was just a basketball play. I was in the wrong spot at the wrong time, she fell — there’s no way she would intentionally try to hurt me. I have nothing but love for Bria. I even told my mom, because she tweeted something… Bria and I are super cool. She would never try to hurt me. There are some girls that might, but she would never do that." Bria Hartley has faced backlash, but that narrative can now be put to rest after Cunningham publicly addressed the play and shared her personal thoughts. Unfortunately for the Fever, Cunningham becomes the third player to suffer a season-ending injury this year, joining Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald, who were both injured in the same game just over a week ago. Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark remains sidelined, though head coach Stephanie White has expressed hope that she will return before the end of the season — a boost the Fever need now more than ever.

Shaquille O'Neal makes peace with longtime enemy — mostly

Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard patched things up Sunday after years of feuding. But even while describing their rapprochement, O'Neal couldn't keep from teasing his longtime nemesis. The "Big Aristotle" was at the BIG3 playoffs Sunday to watch Howard's L.A. Riot play the Chicago Triplets. In the middle of describing to Rachel Nichols how he and Howard had made peace, O'Neal broke off his explanation to make fun of Howard for missing a dunk. The two Hall of Fame centers had sparred for years, despite their common ground as former members of the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers. Some of the tension seemed to be due to Howard adopting O'Neal's "Superman" nickname, though O'Neal claimed to Nichols that he was simply being tough on Howard to motivate him. That explanation doesn't account for the time O'Neal mocked Howard for playing basketball in the Taiwanese league or the decade-plus he's spent roasting Howard on his podcast, in public appearances and on "Inside the NBA." Still, it appears that the two have made peace. Despite O'Neal being left off the original list of presenters, he insisted that he'll be among a group of Hall of Famers inducting Howard Sept. 6, including Dominique Wilkins, Robert Parish, Dennis Rodman and Patrick Ewing. It means that two of the most dominant big men of their eras have finally buried the hatchet. It's added a new level of interest to the Hall of Fame ceremonies, and it should be a sweet moment between O'Neal and Howard. As long as Howard doesn't mention Superman.

Three-time NASCAR champion to retire after 2025 season

A storied NASCAR career will come to an end after 2025. Three-time NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion and 15-time race winner Matt Crafton will retire following the Truck Series championship race at Phoenix Raceway, concluding a NASCAR career that has spanned 25 years. Crafton, 49, has spent the entirety of his NASCAR Truck Series career — save for 2004 — with ThorSport Racing. His partnership with Menards has made his No. 88 truck iconic. Following Friday's eero 250 at Richmond Raceway, Crafton has made a total of 585 Truck Series starts and 592 across the top-three series of NASCAR competition. His last Truck Series victory came at Kansas in July 2020. Crafton failed to qualify for the 2025 Truck Series playoffs and will not compete for a fourth title in his final season. 2025 marks the second consecutive year that Crafton has missed the postseason and the second time he's missed it since NASCAR instituted the playoffs in the Truck Series in 2016. Through 18 races in 2025, Crafton is 16th in the Truck Series standings with three top-10 finishes. Defending Truck Series champion and ThorSport driver Ty Majeski will take over the No. 88 in 2026.

Aaron Rodgers says Favre-inspired weapon paying off with Steelers, 'really impressive'

Aaron Rodgers has started more games than any player in the NFL — so it’s safe to say he’s learned a thing or two. It’s hard not to when you’re that old… Rodgers has picked up all sorts of hardware during stints with the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets — okay, he didn’t do anything with the latter — before signing on for what likely is his final season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s something he learned before he ever started playing that helps the most this late into his career, however. Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers learned key skill from Brett Favre Rodgers discussed how he learned the art of the hard count while playing behind Brett Favre during an appearance on Not Just Football with Cam Heyward. “Brett Favre had a great cadence, so I copied the things I liked and expanded where I felt like there was room to expand,” Rodgers said. “I’ve been doing it for a long time — there’s a rhythmic nature to it and also a non-rhythmic nature to it that is an important aspect of it.” Rodgers has introduced the art to his new teammates, who seem to be taking to it well. “I would say being with a new team and with new players, the focus and the ability to lock in with cadence is some of the best I’ve seen for a training camp, especially being with a new group like this,” Rodgers said. “We are not having free snap issues on the cadence, especially with long counts, has been really impressive. I got to give credit to my saddlebag partner, Zach [Frazier] upfront.” Aaron Rodgers’ effectiveness with weapon hasn’t been great since 2020 Rodgers was long known for his ability to draw penalties with the hard count, but those numbers have diminished in recent seasons. It’s actually astonishing how far they’ve fallen… Rodgers led the entire league in drawn penalties back in 2014 but finished in last place in 2024. Aaron Rodgers drawn penalties since 2020 Rodgers will hope that things can turn back in the other direction with a more competent team around him. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (70 drawn penalties since 2020) and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (44 drawn penalties since 2021) have certainly benefited from that in recent seasons. The Steelers hope to do the same.
