Kevin Durant's future is a significant talking point for NBA fans. The two-time champion is expected to part ways with the Phoenix Suns this summer. As such, there will likely be a list of teams lining up to try and secure his services for next season.
"In speaking with various teams, Kevin Durant's departure via trade in coming weeks is frequently described as an inevitability," NBA insider Marc Stein wrote in a June 6 report.
While every major-market team will be linked with a potential trade for the aging superstar, it would appear the San Antonio Spurs could also enter the bidding war. Longtime radio host John Gambadoro, who has covered the Suns for decades, recently revealed that those close to Durant believe the Spurs are a viable landing spot.
"I do know somebody who has been with Kevin Durant recently," Gambadoro said. "And Kevin Durant and this person talked about the Spurs. And that's why I mentioned the Spurs. Now, I don't want to say who, but somebody that KD knows and trusts who was talking to KD mentioned the Spurs, he mentioned the Spurs."
Adding Durant to the Spurs roster would undoubtedly elevate them into a legitimate threat. The frontcourt duo of Durant and center Victor Wembanyama would be breathtaking, as San Antonio would boast two of the most skilled and versatile players in the world. Furthermore, guard Stephon Castle will have all the space needed to continue his on-the-job development.
The Spurs have all the assets required to spring a star trade. Every star veteran whom Wembanyama can play next to is a great addition to his education. After all, he had Chris Paul to learn from this past season. Durant would be an ideal mentor for the years to come.
As such, San Antonio could have multiple reasons to chase Durant this summer. If he does become available, expect the Texas-based team to be among the front-runners for his services.
