Virginia Tech suffers huge recruiting loss to fledgling 2026 class
Things are looking tough for Virginia Tech on the 2026 recruiting trail.
Head coach Brent Pry's 2025 class is ranked No. 48 in the nation, which is nothing to write home about. Now, his 2026 class just lost its top recruit.
Carnell Warren is a four-star wide receiver from Bluffton, South Carolina, who had been committed to VT since the second day of January.
That's a commitment that no longer stands, as Warren announced Thursday on social media that he's opening his recruitment back up.
"After long thoughts and consideration, I'm opening my recruitment back up. I wanna thank everyone in Blacksburg for everything, it means a lot," he wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

To say that this is a tough loss for Pry and the Hokies' staff is an understatement. Warren is ranked as the No. 50 wideout in the 2026 class, according to the 247Sports Composite.
Having a top-50 player at a position is no small deal for a program like Virginia Tech that is trying to get back up off the mat. The Hokies went 6-7 last season with a loss in the Duke's Mayo Bowl, and one would imagine another tough campaign could spell disaster for Pry.
He's gone 16-21 in three seasons in Blacksburg.
Warren, of course, would not have impacted the 2025 season, but he did represent a bit of hope for an otherwise underwhelming class. With the loss of his commitment, VT only has two players aboard for 2026, and both are three-star recruits. One is a kicker.
The Hokies, of course, still have time to build a class up, but these results on the recruiting trail are extremely underwhelming for a program that absolutely needs a boost.

Notre Dame Reacts to Malachi Fields News on Wednesday
Notre Dame may have fallen short in its unlikely run for the national championship last season, but it heads into 2025 with a roster brimming with talent. That includes wide receiver Malachi Fields, who was named to the 2025 Biletnikoff Award Watch List, the award for the nation’s most outstanding college football receiver. It is the second consecutive season that Fields was named to the list, and the program shared some praise for the accomplishment. The Fighting Irish took to X to share a three-word post about Fields. "Elite wide out," the post read. As the university noted in its announcement about Fields, the receiver is tied for seventh in the nation among FBS players for consecutive games with a reception. Fields has appeared in 36 games in his college career, making 129 receptions for 1,849 yards and 11 touchdowns. Fields is not the only player on Notre Dame earning some preseason love. Running back Jeremiyah Love and cornerback Leonard Moore were honored by The Sporting News as preseason first-team All-American players. The outlet noted that Love is coming off a breakout season where he rushed for 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns, adding 28 receptions for 237 yards. "[B]ut it goes beyond the numbers," the outlet noted. "He had 24 runs of 10 yards or more on 163 carries according to PFF.com – a percentage of 14.7% that could translate to huge numbers with a full workload. Love averages 6.9 yards per carry, and he never had more than 16 carries in a single game last season. We think he will handle the increased workload with great success.”
Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani reaches yet another incredible milestone
Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani entered Wednesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals on the precipice of another milestone. Ohtani had recorded 999 hits in his career, an impressive number considering he continued to hit while rehabbing after a pair of elbow surgeries and the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He notched his 1,000th career hit in the third inning, belting a two-run homer off Cardinals pitcher Matthew Liberatore. While that home run temporarily gave his team a 2-1 lead, the Dodgers' bullpen failed to hold on in the 5-3 loss. Ohtani has put together an impressive season as he slowly works himself back as a starting pitcher. He has posted a .276/.381/.606 batting line in 521 plate appearances, hitting 39 homers and 15 doubles while stealing 16 bases. Ohtani also has a 2.37 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP over 19 innings, striking out 25 batters with just five walks. His 1,000th hit is another milestone in a career that is on track to end in Cooperstown. The 2018 American League Rookie of the Year, Ohtani is a five-time All-Star and three-time MVP, joining Hall of Fame outfielder Frank Robinson as the only players to win the MVP award in both leagues. He is one home run shy of his fourth season with 40 or more homers and is the only player in major league history to hit 50+ homers and steal 50+ bases in the same season. Ohtani's exploits on the mound have been equally impressive. He has reached the double-digit mark in wins twice and has struck out more than 150 batters in a season three times. Ohtani finished fourth in the 2022 AL Cy Young race after posting a 15-9 record with a 2.33 ERA and a 1.012 WHIP over 166 innings, striking out 219 batters with 44 walks. It is sure to be one of the many milestones Ohtani reaches as his career continues.
Patriots stars react to HC Mike Vrabel getting bloodied while breaking up camp fight
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel likely won the respect of his team Wednesday. However, he may have needed a few stitches afterward. The Patriots hosted a joint practice with the Washington Commanders at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. New England rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson took a Commanders pass-rusher to the ground in pass protection, resulting in a scuffle. Vrabel then jumped in to help stop the fight. His face was bloodied after both teams calmed down. Patriots second-year quarterback Drake Maye loved that his coach was willing to step in. In a news conference after practice, the 22-year-old passer said that's the mentality the team needs. "That's what we're trying to build," he said. "The intensity, bringing it every day, taking no cr-p when we're out on the field. But also, it comes a time where, with our guys offensively, and getting over there and getting some tussles and kind of having some penalties, and extra after the whistle, can get us in trouble. But for mentality, I like it. I mean, I almost got in there, but I think maybe another day, maybe." His new coach doesn't want the QB to get in any brawls. The Patriots are banking on the third overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft being the franchise's future. Plus, he doesn't need to worry about the Patriots' intensity with Vrabel in the building. New England wide receiver DeMario Douglas noted the former linebacker didn't seem rattled after breaking up the scrap. "I said, 'Coach, what's wrong with you?' And he said, 'You should have seen the other guy,'" Douglas told the media while smiling. "I just saw the scar on his face but didn't know what was happening." Vrabel likely sent two messages at Wednesday's practice. He won't tolerate an undisciplined team but also has his players' backs. That could go a long way for a Patriots squad aiming to improve after a 4-13 season.
Tonka Hemingway Earning First Teams Reps With Las Vegas Raiders
Former South Carolina defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway is earning first-team reps with the Las Vegas Raiders. NFL preseason games will continue over the next few days, and one former South Carolina Gamecock has a major opportunity ahead of him with the Las Vegas Raiders. According to recent reports, Tonka Hemingway has been earning first-team reps with the Raiders during training camp. The former fourth-round pick is on track to earn playing time during his first season with the organization, but he will have to earn those minutes during preseason games over the next few weeks. "It's been fun," Hemingway said on Tuesday. "Coming out here and competing. Getting to know some of the guys. Just learning from all of them it means a lot." Hemingway was asked if any specific player has been helpful to his development so far, and the former Gamecock said the whole team has been beneficial for him. "Really the whole room I would say," Hemingway conitnued. "All of the vets, just listening to them talk. They may not be talking to you but may parents always said just listen. So just listening to them, hearing them talk, seeing how they work, take everything in, that's been real good." Hemingway was a difference maker for the Gamecocks last season. In 2024, he finished the season with 25 tackles, four tackles for loss and four sacks. His final season helped land him with the Raiders, to which he would later sign a four-year deal worth $4.87 million with a $666K signing bonus. On the Raiders' unofficial depth chart, Hemingway is listed as the third-string defensive end. He will have the opportunity to improve his slot, but regardless, it sounds like Hemingway has earned the right to playing time this season.
