Red-hot Mets rally past Nationals with walk-off win

The New York Mets have played their best baseball of late, and that continued on Tuesday night in the form of a walk-off.

After rallying from a 4-2 deficit to force extras, Mets outfielder Jeff McNeil hit a walk-off double to right field to drive in second baseman Luisangel Acuna and win, 5-4, in 10 innings.

While the pitching for the Mets was not its best with starter Griffin Canning allowing seven hits and four earned runs, their star power made their presence felt on offense.

Right fielder Juan Soto hit the team's only home run of the game and an RBI double, while first baseman Pete Alonso added the RBI to tie the game at 4-4 in the eighth.

This was the latest win for a Mets team that has been on a heater lately. With four straight wins and 13 in its last 16, New York (43-24) moves to 19 games over .500 for the first time since 2022 and also possess the best record in the National League.

The Mets are 9-2 in their last 11 games. Those two losses came to the defending-champion Los Angeles Dodgers, both 6-5 defeats, which speaks to the potential of this Mets team.

With 4.62 runs per game, the Mets are tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for seventh in the league, per TeamRankings. New York is just as impressive on the mound, with its pitching giving up the second-fewest home runs per game (0.70).

The pitching may not have been as solid on Tuesday night, but that kind of balance on both sides of the plate is why the Mets are leading the NL and what makes them difficult to play against.

Two more games with division-rival Washington remain over the next two days before a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays takes place this weekend. If the momentum carries over, the Mets have the pieces to extend their lead in the National League and make another playoff push.
