Brewers get big series win ahead of clash with Cubs

Still looking up at the Chicago Cubs, the Milwaukee Brewers capped off the weekend with a giant series win over the team right below them in the National League Central standings.

Now a game-and-a-half up on the Cardinals, Milwaukee's 3-2 win on Father's Day secured second place in the NL Central. The Brewers won their third game in their four-game series with St. Louis thanks to a home run from their top star, a quality start on the mound and support from the bullpen.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Christian Yelich smacked a pitch over the fence in left center field. Yelich's home run was only a solo shot, but it tied the game and was one of his three hits on the day.

Yelich, who has been with Milwaukee since 2018, now has 14 home runs and 43 RBI despite an average below his normal standards at .239.

Yelich's big game was only his third multi-hit performance of the month

Milwaukee would add one more in the fourth and then another in the seventh, just putting enough on the board to get by the Cardinals. Yelich's home run was the only Brewer run scored via a hit, with Sal Frelick and Drew Avans picking up an RBI apiece.

Most importantly, Milwaukee benefited from another quality start from Quinn Priester, who allowed only one run off four hits in six innings. Priester won for the fifth time in nine starts, moving his record to 5-2.

Supporting Priester, relievers Abner Uribe, Nick Mears and Trevor Megill came in and held serve. Jared Koenig did give up the late Cardinal run, but his struggles in his brief appearance ended up not mattering in the grand scheme of the game.

With this divisional series win, Milwaukee sits exactly five games behind Chicago for first place as they head to Wrigley Field for a three-game set with the Cubs.

The pressure is on the 39-34 Brewers as they have an opportunity to storm up the standings if they can take their recent success on the road.  Chicago will also enter the series riding high after taking three out of four against the Pirates.
