The good news: If Corey Perry is on your team, you’re guaranteed a trip to the Stanley Cup Final.
Unfortunately, you’re destined to lose, too, it seems. With the Edmonton Oilers‘ loss on Tuesday night, Perry has now lost five Stanley Cup titles over the past six years, with his lone title coming with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007.
Since then, Perry has lost two Cup finals with Edmonton, one with Tampa Bay, one with Montreal and one with Dallas dating back to 2020.
Perry became the first player in NHL history last year to make the Cup final with five different teams – an incredible statistic for the one-time Hart Trophy winner. This year, Perry had an excellent postseason showing, registering 14 points in 22 games. It was his best playoff production since he put up 18 in 2014-15.
Perry has 141 points in 237 playoff games over his career. He has never been a big postseason producer, but he has figured out how to be an intimidating force in his later years. Now at 40, Perry has shown he’s still capable of playing quality hockey.
However, it must be painful to lose the Cup year after year, regardless of the team or the circumstances.
Perry became the 34th player to lose at least four times in the Stanley Cup Final, with Petr Sykora being the most recent to do so with the Pittsburgh Penguins back in 2008. No other active NHLer has done such a thing.
On the flipside, Henri Richard is the most successful player in Stanley Cup Final history, winning 11 championships in 12 appearances. The only other player to win double-digit titles is Jean Beliveau, who had 10 in 12 attempts with the Canadiens.
Statistically, Red Horner and Busher Jackson are the least successful players in Stanley Cup Final history, having just one championship in their seven attempts each.
