Mystics guard deserves serious Rookie of the Year consideration

Dallas Wings rookie guard Paige Bueckers missed Saturday's win against the Washington Mystics, but fans still caught a legitimate Rookie of the Year candidate.

Because after a second 20-10 double-double in her last four games, Mystics guard Sonia Citron deserves serious consideration for the award.

The No. 3 pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft was a bright spot for the Mystics in a 79-71 loss, scoring 22 points and adding 10 rebounds.

On June 22, she had 27 points and 11 rebounds in a 91-88 win over the Wings.

As StatMuse noted, Citron is the only rookie with multiple 20-10 games in 2025.

It was also Citron's third 20-point game this season, which trails Bueckers (six) for most by a rookie, per Across The Timeline.

In 17 games, the former Notre Dame guard is averaging 15.1 points on 47 percent shooting, including 38.2 percent on three-point attempts, five rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

Bueckers leads all rookies in points (18.4) and assists (5.8) per game but has missed five games due to injury. She missed Saturday with her right knee.

As long as she remains on the court during the Wings' final 22 games, Bueckers should run away with Rookie of the Year honors. But if she continues missing time, that would open the door for Citron.

It would also help Citron's case if the Mystics (8-9) remain in the top eight of the standings and reach the playoffs. However, one snag to her candidacy is that she could split votes with her teammate, forward Kiki Iriafen, who is averaging 12.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

Nearing the mid-point of the regular season, Bueckers is in the pole position for Rookie of the Year. But following another big game, Citron reminded voters this isn't a one-woman race.
