AEW has weathered the storm. Tony Khan's company has successfully navigated the most challenging period in its history during which fans began to turn away from the product, and a period of decline took hold.
Over the past six to eight months, AEW has arguably been the most exciting wrestling brand on the planet. The in-ring production has been consistently excellent, storylines have formed and been executed with professionalism and "the feeling" has been restored.
AEW's viewership numbers are increasing. They're making a cognizant effort to promote their content in a more modernized way, including uploads to YouTube. Most importantly, people are talking about the company in a positive light.
During a recent interview with "Wane 15 News," Mick Foley discussed the current hot period benefiting the wrestling world. He noted how AEW's decision to focus on itself, rather than on WWE, has helped it regain momentum.
“Yeah, well, I think we’re in a really strong position," Foley said (h/t Fightful) "WWE on a global basis has never been more successful. I think AEW realizes they don’t have to topple WWE to be really successful and really enjoyable, and there’s other wrestling out there for people who like all kinds of styles. I mean, just like in the city of Chicago, for example, you can find three or four different types of wrestling on a single night and all of it’s good, depending on what your tastes are.”
Foley is onto something. AEW has ignored WWE's attempts to counterprogram some of its big events. It hasn't been drawn on the company prying away some of its talent either. Khan's roster has kept its head down, focused on its own product and is thriving as a result.
AEW recently held an event at Arena Mexico alongside CMLL and is now preparing for All-In Texas, which will be held at Globe Life Field. The company is growing, both nationally and internationally. All it took was for them to look inward, rather than chasing a conglomerate with an insurmountable head start.
