Why Cowboys' Micah Parsons is frustrated with Jerry Jones over contract talks

Dallas Cowboys star pass-rusher Micah Parsons recently indicated that he is "going to get [his] no matter what" regarding what is expected to be a historic contract extension.

During an appearance on the latest edition of the "Six Feet Under" podcast hosted by WWE legend The Undertaker, Parsons expressed some frustrations regarding negotiations between his camp and Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones.

"We obviously wanted to get done early," Parsons said about a potential deal, as shared by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "We want that relief off our backs. But, obviously, ownership is always gonna make it drag out, make it more complicated than it has to be. Lack of communication and that standpoint, but, you know, I just always say, God has me this far, he ain’t done with me yet, so, you know, I just keep working, keep going, and then when it comes, I’m gonna be ready. But, you know, ain’t gonna be no drop off."

Last offseason, Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott went without desired contract extensions until late in the summer. News about Prescott's deal didn't break until hours before the Cowboys opened their 2024 season with a game at the Cleveland Browns.

NFL insiders such as Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated believe it's a matter of when and not if Parsons will receive an extension worth more than the four-year, $160M deal that included $123.5M guaranteed that Myles Garrett of the Browns signed in March. That said, it's possible that Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt and Cincinnati Bengals edge-rusher Trey Hendrickson could put pen to paper on agreements that ultimately make Parsons' extension more expensive for the Cowboys.

"We wanted to do the contract last year," Parsons added. "They were just kind of like, 'We want to do Dak and CeeDee.' Then you go out there and perform again and, you know, you would think, like, alright, we’ll get it done early. We know there’s some guys that’s about to get ready to get repaid, like Myles, you know, [Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders] is gone. So you’d think like, hey, let’s get ahead of that, you know what I mean?"

Parsons attended Dallas' mandatory minicamp in June and is expected to at least participate in individual drills during training camp even though he remains in the final year of his rookie contract. One wonders if Parsons will have a change of heart about reporting to camp on July 21 if he doesn't have an extension in hand by that Monday morning.
