Youth will be served for this season's Eagles squad

Prior to last season, ESPN’s Aaron Schatz ranked the Philadelphia Eagles 29th in terms of quality players under the age of 25. This year, the Eagles did much better, thanks to increased opportunities for their young defenders.

How was Schatz to know rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell (24) and Cooper DeJean (23), Philadelphia’s first two picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, would finish in the top-four of the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting?

This year, he lists Mitchell, along with Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jalen Carter (24), as the team’s two blue-chip players under 25.

Meanwhile, DeJean landed at No. 60 on the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2025. No word on where Mitchell will land, but with 1,582 combined snaps, the two had plenty of opportunities to showcase their talents last season, something their teammates hope to do in 2025.

A first-round pick in 2023, edge-rusher Nolan Smith (24) played 55% of team snaps last season after appearing in just 16% of plays as a rookie. Quite a feat considering he shared the field with defensive ends Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat, neither of whom are with the team anymore.

Smith had 42 tackles and 6.5 sacks in the regular season with 16 tackles and four sacks in the postseason, numbers that should only go up in 2025.

Fellow edge-rusher Jalyx Hunt (24), a third-round pick in last year’s draft, played very little in early games but the Eagles used him more as the year went on. The former Houston Christian product finished the regular season with 21 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles while appearing in just 25% of snaps.

Hunt finished with 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a quarterback hit in four postseason games and should play a much larger role in 2025.

As will Moro Ojomo (23), a 6-foot-3, 292-pound defensive tackle who, per Nick Tricome of The Philly Voice, has been a “menace” in recent training camp practices. A seventh-round pick in 2023, Ojomo has yet to record a regular season sack but took down the Rams’ Matthew Stafford in the divisional round of last year’s playoffs.

With Milton Williams now with the Patriots, the Eagles have 501 snaps to fill at defensive tackle. Ojomo played on 37% of snaps last season, tied for third among the team’s defensive tackles with Jordan Davis (25), the team’s first-round pick in 2022.

At linebacker, Philadelphia looks to be in good shape with Nakobe Dean (24), Jeremiah Trotter Jr. (22) and first-round pick Jihaad Campbell (21) competing to play alongside All-Pro Zach Baun.

Dean is expected to miss part of next season as he recovers from a torn patellar tendon he suffered against the Packers in last year’s playoffs. Campbell underwent shoulder surgery after the NFL Scouting Combine but has looked good with the first-team defense in camp. Trotter has also impressed and will look to build on the 10% of snaps he played last season as a 21-year-old rookie.
