The Philadelphia Phillies have been searching for bullpen upgrades ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. They may have found their match.
Insider Jayson Stark reported during an interview on 97.5 The Fanatic on Wednesday that the Phillies are targeting Minnesota Twins reliever Griffin Jax. Stark went on to say that a deal for Twins closer Jhoan Duran would not happen as the club refuses to include top pitching prospect Andrew Painter in trade talks.
Jax has emerged as one of the best relievers in the majors since the start of the 2022 season. He has posted a 3.22 ERA and a 1.064 WHIP over 254.2 innings, striking out 313 batters with 67 walks.
Although Jax had a rough start to 2025, he has returned to his normal level of production. He has a 3.91 ERA and a 1.217 WHIP across 46 innings entering Wednesday, with 72 strikeouts and 13 walks. He would give the Phillies another high-octane arm for a bullpen that needs late-inning help.
The biggest question is how Philadelphia would use Jax. He has some experience in the ninth inning, notching 10 saves as Duran missed the first month of the 2024 campaign.
However, the Phillies need an answer at closer as the playoffs approach. Reliever Jordan Romano has been inconsistent and cannot be counted on to close out a postseason game. Left-hander Jose Alvarado was suspended in May for violating the league's substance abuse policy and will not be permitted to participate in the playoffs.
While Alvarado is expected to be a key part of the bullpen once he is eligible to return on Aug. 19, the Phillies need a better option in October. Jax may be what they have been looking for.
