Braves coach under microscope for incident with Yankees star

A tense interaction between New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Atlanta Braves assistant coach Eddie Perez caught the attention of Major League Baseball.

Perez and Chisholm exchanged words in the sixth inning of New York's 12-9 road win on Saturday. The Athletic's Chris Kirschner reported Sunday MLB is now investigating Perez.

Chisholm was relaying signs to Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe while he was hitting, which upset Perez. After Volpe hit a sacrifice fly to send the infielder from second to third, the coach started pointing to his head. The Yankees thought he may have been threatening to hit their star with a pitch.

"I hope it didn't (have to do with throwing at his head), because obviously there's no place for that," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday morning at Truist Park in Atlanta, per Kirschner. "That's certainly something that would not be OK. I hope he didn't mean anything like that by it, because that would deserve some looking into."

Perez insists he wasn't telling someone to throw at Chisholm's head.

"I was just saying, 'Be smart,'" Perez said, via MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "I like that guy. He's one of my favorites. And he got mad about it. So I was like, 'Take it easy,' and he started doing some stuff."

Perhaps it was just a misunderstanding between Perez and the Yankees. In Sunday's road game, the Braves didn't throw a pitch at Chisholm. Atlanta's organist, however, trolled him with his walk-up song. He played "The Sign" by Ace of Base whenever he stepped up to the plate.

That didn't affect Chisholm. He finished 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI in a 4-2 win.
