The Philadelphia Phillies have kicked off their midseason mission of adding bullpen pieces by adding veteran reliever David Robertson. The 40-year-old former World Series champion auditioned for teams on Sunday which was attended by several teams.
Robertson now begins his third stint with the Phillies, but they need him now more than ever. The bullpen has been struggling all season long, as it is in the bottom 10 of the league in ERA, AVG and WHIP. They are also missing one of their standouts in Jose Alvarado, who was suspended for 80 games in May due to a failed PED test and will also not be eligible for the playoffs.
The Phillies' president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, is someone who knows when to be aggressive for teams in a title window. He famously acquired Chris Sale from the Chicago White Sox during his tenure with the Boston Red Sox, which helped them capture the 2018 World Series. He was also responsible for the 1997 Florida Marlins World Series championship squad, along with building contenders in several other stops before making his way to the Phillies.
Jayson Stark of The Athletic went on the Foul Territory podcast on Friday to discuss the rumblings he has heard about Dombrowski and his potential dealings.

With the Phillies ready to make a splash, several relievers could be available at the trade deadline. One option can be the 2024 saves leader, Ryan Helsley, who could be available depending on how well the St. Louis Cardinals perform over the next few weeks. Then there are the likes of Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax and Emmanuel Clase, all of whom were reported by Matt Gelb of The Athletic that the Phillies were interested in.

The Phillies are currently 56-43 and have a half-game game over the New York Mets in the NL East. However, they just lost two of three to the Los Angeles Angels at home to kick off the second half of the season.
The bullpen allowed 11 total hits and five earned runs throughout the three-game series. The signing of Robertson is a good start, but the Phillies need to make more moves to compete for a title.
