Orioles have an underrated trade chip in Charlie Morton

Charlie Morton did not appear to have anything left in the tank in his first six outings with the Baltimore Orioles.

Morton was shelled in those six outings, posting a 10.36 ERA and a 2.219 WHiP over his 24.1 innings, taking the loss in each appearance. He struck out 24 batters, but also issued 20 walks and allowed six homers. At 41, Father Time appeared to have finally caught up to the righty.

The Orioles banished Morton to the bullpen, having him work in long relief before inserting him back into the rotation on May 26. That stint in the bullpen worked as Morton has looked like his old self. He has posted a 3.87 ERA and a 1.425 WHiP over his 60.1 innings, striking out 61 batters with 24 walks after his outing in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Morton gave up eight hits, three earned runs and three walks while collecting a pair of strikeouts in six innings of work in Baltimore's 16-4 win over Toronto.

Despite that victory, the Orioles have a 49-58 record and are clearly selling at the trade deadline. Reliever Gregory Soto has already been traded to the Mets, and Seranthony Dominguez was sent to the Blue Jays on Tuesday in-between the doubleheader.

Other players such as designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn, outfielder Cedric Mullins and pitcherand Tomoyuki Sugano potentially set to join Soto and Dominguez out the door in the coming days.

Morton's resurgence has put him squarely on the radar for contending teams as well. His salary — $15M for this season — may be an issue, but the Orioles may be willing to pay that down to receive a better prospect. Morton could be an underrated addition for a team looking to solidify the back of the rotation, especially as he has pitched far better over the past two months.
