Mikal Bridges struggled during his debut season with the New York Knicks. The two-way forward was the odd man out in Tom Thibodeau's offensive system, often limiting his overall impact, especially in games where his defense didn't shine.
However, after parting with a monster trade haul to pry him away from the Brooklyn Nets, the Knicks look set to continue with him as their key three-and-D wing. On Thursday, July 31, Bridges agreed to a four-year $150 million contract to remain with the Knicks, as reported by ESPN's Shams Charania.
"New York Knicks forward Mikal Bridges has agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract extension with the franchise, agents Sam Goldfeder and Jordan Gertler of Excel Sports Management tell ESPN," Charania reported. "The new deal includes a player option for 2029-30 and a trade kicker...Bridges takes a slight discount from his max extension number ($156M) in order to help the Knicks have flexibility to continue building the roster and add pieces to the East championship contender."
Bridges may find a new lease of life under Mike Brown. New York will likely look to play at a higher tempo, which will suit his offensive style. While on defense, the Knicks will likely be more fluid, allowing for Bridges' size, length and overall instincts to play a key role in his production.
The Knicks — who are still interested in a former No. 1 overall draft pick — knew it was trading for a connector in Bridges. He was never supposed to lead the team in scoring or jump out at you in the box score. Instead, he's an iron man, who is rarely unavailable and always plugs gaps within a rotation. Bridges does the little things that help a championship team separate itself from the chasing pack. He's the glue that allows others to shine.
Securing Bridges' long-term future was a smart play. The Knicks gave up five first-round picks to bring him to Madison Square Garden. If he'd rejected a contract offer or opted to let his deal run down, it would have been awful optics for the front office.
Now, with Bridges' future secure and a new head coach leading the way, all eyes will be on how New York handles the upcoming season. The roster has been constructed to contend for championships. Anything less will likely be deemed a failure.
