The New York Giants were officially formed on Aug. 1, 1925, which is why the 2024 season was seen at this time last year as a milestone campaign for the organization.
During a recent chat with Tom Rock of Newsday, Giants co-owner John Mara suggested he wouldn't be holding any kind of significant celebration regarding the club's birthday on Friday.
"To tell you the truth, I am hundredth-ed out after last season," Mara admitted. "I’m trying to forget that one as quickly as possible."
Mara's comments are understandable considering all that occurred from last September through January 2025. His Giants went from 2-3 to 2-13 during a stretch of play that involved the benching and subsequent release of starting quarterback Daniel Jones. ESPN stats show that Big Blue finished the season ranked 30th in the league with an average of 294.8 offensive yards gained per game and 31st with an average of 16.1 points scored per contest.
Thus, it makes sense that everybody involved would like to bury the Giants' 2024 campaign miles beneath the earth.
"I am conscious of the date," Mara said about the first day of August. "It is momentous for sure. But I’m not sure we’re planning on doing anything special."
Giants head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen should see Mara's words as a warning shot after the team’s current president and CEO said back in January that he had "just about run out of patience" with the club's regime. Ever since the Giants notched the franchise's fourth Super Bowl win in February 2012, New York has gone 1-2 in playoff games. The Giants' last postseason victory occurred in January 2023.
“I hope they can say we added a few more Super Bowl trophies to our lot," Mara responded when asked what he hopes people will say about the Giants 100 years from now. "We’re proud of the fact we have a brand that I think people respect and a fan base that is extraordinary. Hopefully, we’ll be able to continue that growth and obviously have more success on the field . . . We still have a tremendous fan base that has stayed loyal for many, many years. You always have to be appreciative of that."
That fan base may not tolerate Mara giving Daboll and Schoen more time to turn things around if the 2025 Giants are seen as a laughingstock by Christmas. Fair or not, it sounds like Mara will clean house if the Giants give him another season that he will want to forget.
