Commanders HC on Terry McLaurin's trade request: 'It's an emotional time'

Second-year Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is trying to prepare for the 2025 regular season while not knowing if one of his offense's best pieces will be on the 53-man roster for Week 1.

On Thursday, wide receiver Terry McLaurin requested a trade from the Commanders after not coming close to a new deal with general manager Adam Peters.

On Saturday, Quinn talked to the media about his thoughts on the trade request. Quinn said it's just a part of business in the modern NFL, but hopes McLaurin returns to practice soon.

"We love Terry," Quinn said via video from JP Finlay of NBC 4. "I'm really glad he's here. Hopefully he's out practicing soon. We also understand there's the business side of this, things that Adam and his side and Terry and his reps are working through. I just kind of stay in that space. We recognize both are happening.

"But like I said, I'm really glad he's here. I love coaching him. But the business side, that's kind of where it's at. It's not — somebody asked me if it's a distraction — it is not. Players today, they're more aware of contracts and things maybe than they used to be. They recognize that business part happens, as well."

Quinn doesn't want to judge McLaurin or the front office during the negotiations. He acknowledged it was an emotional summer for the Commanders.

"Sometimes, those are the emotions and that's the human side of it," Quinn said. "Knowing there can be emotions, that's the ones he attached to at that moment. For me, as the coach, give the support, give the insights, do you want advice? That's the way that you do it. But it is an emotional time...

"I just try to not judge it as best I can, and it's not always that easy to do knowing it's an emotional time. Our times together are intense for different reasons."

The former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator is doing his best to navigate a challenging time for a team that has high aspirations for 2025 after making the NFC championship in his and quarterback Jayden Daniels' first season in Washington.

There is a reason why Quinn gets the best out of his players. Now he needs the front office to ensure McLaurin returns to practice as soon as possible.
