Trevor Lawrence turns in a solid performance despite silly mistake

Except for an early miscue, Trevor Lawrence's second preseason game should give Jacksonville Jaguars fans reason for optimism.

On his first drive in a road game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Lawrence slipped and fumbled the ball during a handoff to third-year running back Tank Bigsby. New Orleans rookie defensive lineman Vernon Broughton recovered the ball at the Saints' 12-yard line.

Lawrence rebounded after the turnover. On the ensuing drive, he fired a strike to third-year wide receiver Parker Washington for a seven-yard touchdown, giving Jacksonville a 7-0 lead. The score capped off an eight-play, 55-yard drive for the Jaguars.

Lawrence finished 8-of-10 passing for 76 yards and one TD on two drives. He also posted an above-average 131.7 passer rating in the 17-17 tie.

Through his first two preseason games, Lawrence has completed 14-of-17 passes for 119 yards and one TD. Preseason stats should be taken with a grain of salt, but it appears the 25-year-old QB could be improving under new Jaguars head coach Liam Coen.

"I think we're starting to get on the same page as far as [how] I'm thinking, how he's thinking in certain concepts and playing faster," Lawrence said Thursday, via Juston Lewis of the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union. "That is going to be something that just continues to grow as we play more together. ... But it's been awesome having him as our coach."

The synergy between Lawrence and Coen could be helping the QB play with more confidence. The 33rd Team's Steve Palazzolo noted Lawrence has been "playing faster and getting to his second/third reads more efficiently" during the preseason.

Lawrence still must avoid turnovers, which have prevented the 2021 No. 1 overall pick from reaching his potential. In his first four seasons with the Jaguars, he had 52 turnovers (46 interceptions, six lost fumbles).

The fumble against the Saints, however, shouldn't overshadow his progress. Most of his tape this preseason probably looks solid.
