Cowboys receive significant Trevon Diggs update amid ongoing Micah Parsons uncertainty

The Dallas Cowboys can now plug one of their defensive holes.

On Sunday, Patrik Walker of the team website announced cornerback Trevon Diggs (left knee) will be removed from the physically unable to perform list and moved to the 53-man roster. It's still unclear whether he will play in Dallas' regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4, but he won't be forced to miss the first four games of the season.

The injury update is great news for the Cowboys, especially with EDGE Micah Parsons' status for Week 1 remaining uncertain. The 26-year-old pass-rusher, who is set to play on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, is seeking an extension and has requested a trade. Diggs has said he's unsure whether his teammate will hold out of regular-season games.

Diggs has battled knee issues over the past two seasons. He also suffered a season-ending ACL tear in his left knee in September 2023. When healthy, though, the 2020 second-round pick is one of the better corners in the NFL.

In his first five seasons with the Cowboys, Diggs has made two Pro Bowls and amassed 20 interceptions. The defensive back, who turns 27 on Sept. 20, seems eager to recapture his elite form.

"Oh, I'm very hungry," Diggs said of playing again, via ESPN's Todd Archer. "I'm itching to get back out on the field. Like I can't wait."

Diggs returning as soon as possible would be a boon for the Cowboys' secondary, which struggled to stop the pass in 2024. Dallas allowed the league's 17th-most passing yards (218.1 per game) last season.

It's worth noting CB DaRon Bland —  who set an NFL record for pick-sixes (five in 17 games) in 2023 — missed seven games because of a stress fracture in his left foot. He has remained healthy throughout the offseason thus far.

Diggs and Bland remaining at full strength could give the Cowboys an elite tandem, which they would need if Parsons skips regular-season games.

Dallas' pass-rush would falter without Parsons, who had 12 sacks in 13 games last season. No other Cowboy eclipsed 5.5 sacks in 2024.
