Kansas HC Lance Leipold stunned by intensity of Border War rivalry with Missouri

Lance Leipold knew that there'd be some animosity from outside when he took the head-coaching job for the Kansas Jayhawks. He figured that animosity would come from the Kansas State program and Wildcats fans, and to be fair, there is no love lost between K-State and Kansas.

There is something different about the "Border War" rivalry between the Missouri Tigers and the Jayhawks, though. It's a rivalry college football hasn't seen since 2011, but it's coming back this season in Week 2 from Mizzou's Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Missouri.

There's a lot of animosity between these two fan bases, and according to Leipold, it's at a level that has been surprising to him. He recently spoke to Jim Rome about the upcoming game and the Kansas fan base's thoughts on Missouri.

“It’s one of those things that when I first took the job, I didn’t really realize it,” Leipold said of the intensity of the rivalry (h/t On3). “Even as you have an in-state rival in Kansas State, who has an excellent program, you find out that there’s really more people that have a displeasure in the team across state-lines in Missouri than they did for the in-state school.”

Kansas had a Week 0 matchup with Fresno State that went swimmingly. The Jayhawks won, 31-7. Up next is a Week 1 "tune-up" with Wagner, and then it's on to Missouri.

That's going to be a huge game for Kansas with a chance to (likely) go to 3-0 on the line. This game is going to be intense, and the buildup to it promises to be fun as well.

Kansas can't get caught looking ahead, though. Wagner may be a Northeast Conference team, but this is still a game that counts for the win-loss record in Week 1.

Per Leopold, the time for getting hopped up on hate for Mizzou will come for the Jayhawks, but they have to stay focused.

“I’m starting to learn more about it and it’s starting to pick up some fever, but like you said we've got to make sure we keep our focus where it needs to be and I’m sure the excitement will start to pick up game week when we play Missouri," he said.
