World No. 2 Iga Swiatek didn't take kindly to a reporter’s question about whether she needs a mental-health break after her loss to Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open on Wednesday.
The reporter asked Swiatek if she was "tired" of the gauntlet of tennis she had to play after her Wimbledon win in July, including Masters 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati, leading to Flushing Meadows.
"Well, I don't know. It's not like my matches were exhausting here," the Pole responded, not knowing he asked her about her mental health.
"Do you feel like a mental break? I'm not talking about the loss as such," the journalist asked in a follow-up question.
"Why would you say that?" Swiatek snapped, leading the reporter to wonder if she was looking forward to a break.
The testy exchange became personal when Swiatek implied that the reporter was likely burned out.
"Well, talk to people responsible for the schedule. Do you need a mental break?" she asked. "You look like you need a mental break."

The reporter can't exactly be blamed for asking the question, given that Swiatek herself previously complained about an overcrowded tennis schedule, expressing concerns and calling for reforms.
"The scheduling is super intense. It's too intense. There's no point for us to play over 20 tournaments in a year," she said in June 2025, via ESPN.
Others, such as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic, have also suggested shorter tournaments and more breaks to support player health and career longevity.
It also doesn't help that the ATP and WTA require top-ranked players to play Masters 1000 events, docking them ranking points for sitting out. That's precisely why Swiatek — in hot pursuit of Aryna Sabalenka for the World No. 1 crown — could not afford to sit out the North American hard-court swing in Montreal and Cincinnati.
Only an aging star like Djokovic has the luxury of picking and choosing his tournaments, but the likes of Swiatek simply cannot. Podcaster Myles David raised a pertinent question on X, wondering why Swiatek got "testy" over a subject that she herself previously raised.

Why get testy when someone asks if you’re tired after playing through a long stretch of tournaments?
