There is not a more intriguing player going into Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season than Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter. Not only was Hunter the No. 2 pick in the draft, but his ability to play both sides of the ball, and how the Jaguars use that unique skill set, is going to be a fascinating storyline to watch unfold.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday evening, we have some idea as to how the Jaguars are going to utilize Hunter in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.
According to Schefter, the Jaguars' plan for Week 1 is for Hunter to be an every-down wide receiver and a situational cornerback. This is in line with Jacksonville's initial depth chart that had him listed as a starting wide receiver and a backup cornerback.

Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, was a full-time player at both wide receiver and cornerback over his two full seasons at the University of Colorado and was an impact player at both. If he can come close to matching that in the NFL, it would make him an extraordinarily valuable player because he would basically be two star players in one. Nobody else in the NFL is capable of doing that.
The big unanswered question with Hunter is whether or not he can maintain that same sort of workload in the NFL. Since 1980, only three players have ever started on both offense and defense in the NFL in the same game. That list features only Deion Sanders (Hunter's college coach), Champ Bailey and Antonio Cromartie.
Hunter only played in one preseason game and missed a handful of practices early on due to injury, but his snaps in the training camp and preseason game he did play were nearly 50-50 in terms of offense and defense.
Even though Hunter's role for Sunday appears to have him focusing more on offense, Schefter also reports that the Jaguars will change things up with him each week and could even have some games where he is a full-time player on both sides of the ball.
That is a demanding ask for any player at the NFL level, and it would be unheard of even among the other players who briefly played both sides of the ball. Sanders, Bailey and Cromartie were still primarily defensive players and only received limited snaps on offense when they played both ways. The expectation for Hunter is obviously far bigger.
