On Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers decided to give a 2022 draft pick a one-year contract extension without seeing him take a single snap in the preseason or in Week 1. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Packers gave wide receiver Christian Watson a one-year contract extension worth $13.25 million while he recovers from an ACL injury suffered in January.
"Even in the midst of rehab for his torn ACL, the Packers are rewarding WR Christian Watson with a one-year, $13.25 million contract extension, per his agent Adisa Bakari," Schefter posted on X. "The extension ties Watson to Green Bay through the 2026 season, allows him to focus on getting healthy and not having to play this season for a new deal. Watson remains on PUP and is expected back later this season."

The contract extension is curious, as the 22-year-old has a history of injury during his time in Green Bay. The Packers have also been aggressive in adding to the receiver room, selecting Matthew Golden in the first round and Savion Williams in the third round of April's draft. Green Bay also has Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks on its roster — all of whom contributed to its big Week 1 win.
The Packers are deciding to make 2026 a prove-it season for Watson while providing him with a nice pay raise, albeit for one season. He signed a four-year deal worth $9.2 million when Green Bay took him with the No. 34 pick in 2022, per Over The Cap.
Watson has appeared in 38 games (started 35) in his NFL career out of a possible 51. He's recorded 98 receptions for 1,653 yards and 14 touchdowns. He's added two rushing touchdowns. Watson has proved to be a threat when healthy because of his sheer speed and route-running ability. Tuesday's extension essentially gives Watson extra time to make sure he's healthy before returning to the field this season. Then he'll have to stay on the field and prove he can be a sturdy target for quarterback Jordan Love if he hopes to stay in Green Bay for 2027.
