'That's a lot': Patriots' Drake Maye has concerning admission about being a starter

Drake Maye experienced some growing pains in the New England Patriots' 20-13 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1. The 2024 No. 3 pick went 30-of-46 passing for 287 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his first game in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' scheme.

Per Tom Carroll of WEEI 93.7, Maye was asked Wednesday if he felt McDaniels put too much on his plate this year. Maye answered that he didn't feel like he had been asked to do too much but acknowledged he's feeling heat as one of the 32 starting quarterbacks in the league.

“Like I said previously, any time you’re playing quarterback in the NFL, there’s a lot on your plate," Maye said. "You’re playing quarterback for one of 32 teams. That’s a lot. And I don’t take it for granted, what a special position it is in this league. There’s a lot of good that comes with it, and there’s a lot of stuff that’s on your plate, and that’s just part of it.”

New England Patriots QB Drake Maye faces challenges in Year 2

Maye is in a challenging position this fall, going into his second season with a second offensive coordinator. (Although, things could be worse, as Caleb Williams is on his fourth offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears since 2024.)

Maye should experience early bumps as he takes regular-season game reps in September. As he becomes more familiar with the scheme, the game should slow down for the 23-year-old quarterback. Maye has a good chance to score some points in Week 2 against a reeling Miami Dolphins defense that surrendered points on every single drive Daniel Jones led for the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1.
