Athletics' Shea Langeliers adds to historic 2025 season for catchers

Seattle Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh isn't the only American League West catcher having a smashing 2025 season. On Wednesday, Athletics backstop Shea Langeliers reached a milestone of his own.

In the first inning against the Boston Red Sox, Langeliers crushed a pitch just over the fence in left-center field. The solo shot was his 30th home run of the season — a new career high. The A's eventually won 5-4.

Langeliers' previous single-season best was the 29 homers he hit across 137 games in 2024. He became the third primary catcher (min. 50% of games played at catcher) to reach 30 home runs this season, making 2025 one of the most powerful seasons for the position in MLB history.

Langeliers joined Raleigh, who has 53 long balls entering Thursday, and Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman, who hit his 30th homer of the year on Tuesday.

Before 2025, there were only two other seasons that saw at least three primary catchers reach 30 home runs. 2025 is, however, the first such occurrence this century, with the most recent season being 1999.

In addition to Langeliers' home run total, he has a .266 batting average, 68 RBI and 65 runs scored — all career highs.

At 67-80, the Athletics are firmly in last place in the AL West. Although the 2025 season may be one that fans want to forget, Langeliers has provided memorable moments and some hope for the future.
