Yankees' Anthony Volpe has injury that could explain his poor season

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe has had a challenging year at the plate, and it may have something to do with the injury he has been playing through for several months now.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported on Thursday that Volpe received a cortisone injection in his shoulder before Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers. Volpe has dealt with the injury since May 3, when he made a diving play against the Tampa Bay Rays and told reporters afterward that he felt a "pop" in his shoulder.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked about Sherman's report, and he revealed that Volpe has a labrum tear in his shoulder. Doctors believe the injury is an old one, but that Volpe initially aggravated it on May 3 and a couple of times since.

"The timeline of it is, obviously he had the incident in May where he dove and hurt his shoulder a little bit but felt it. At that time we MRI'ed it and he had a partial labrum tear that I think they felt like was an old injury," Boone said. "Really, it was more just aggravating it and probably more the swelling of it. Once that got out of there, he was good to go. He's aggravated it maybe a couple of times, Sunday being one of them.

"Each time it's kind of just a swelling issue. He said something about it the other day. We MRI'ed it. It shows a little bit more of a labrum tear, but nothing that we think is gonna land him on the IL or nothing that he can't continue to play through. He already feels better today. I don't expect it to be an issue, but that being said if he goes out there and aggravates it again, we may have to look at it more."

Volpe has struggled at the plate since the injury

Volpe entered Thursday slashing .206/.268/.393 with 19 home runs and 70 RBI. His pop has still been there, but his average is way down from the .243 he hit across 160 games last season. Volpe, however, batted just .209 in 159 games as a rookie in 2023.

While there is no way to know for sure if the injury has impacted Volpe's hitting, the numbers show that he has been worse at the plate since May 3 than he was before aggravating his shoulder.

Before May 3, Volpe hit .239 with a .786 OPS across 32 games. Since May 3, he has batted just .195 with an OPS that has dropped to .621, according to Stats Perform.

Things have only gotten worse in recent weeks. Boone tried to give Volpe a reset by benching him late last month, but it did not seem to have helped. The 24-year-old has just four hits in his previous eight games, batting .095 in September.

Boone still views Volpe as New York's everyday shortstop, but there is no question the former Gold Glove Award winner has been a liability at the plate. It is fair to wonder if his pain has played a role in that.
