Where was this urgency a year ago?
Following the Micah Parsons debacle, Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys made sure not to repeat their past mistakes in extending guard Tyler Smith on a landmark deal. Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Smith received a four-year, $96 million extension to make him the league's highest-paid guard. He's also set to earn $81.2M guaranteed.
Sources: The Cowboys and standout G Tyler Smith agreed to terms on a 4-year, $96M extension —$24M per year — to make him the NFL’s new highest-paid at his position. Smith gets a whopping $81.2M guaranteed.

In May, the Cowboys picked up Smith's 2026 fifth-year option, estimated to cost $21.3M, giving them time to drag their feet once again in extension negotiations, as they did with Parsons after picking up his fifth-year option in April 2024.
However, instead of once again prolonging contract talks, Smith's extension is a refreshing change of pace. The No. 24 overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Smith has started 48 of a possible 52 games over his first four seasons, establishing himself as an integral — and versatile — member of the Cowboys offensive line.
Smith began his career playing 1,118 snaps at left tackle as a rookie, per Pro Football Focus, before shifting inside the left tackle in Year 2. That move proved sound, with Smith selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons.
While the proactive extension should be lauded and helps stabilize the team's future, it doesn't change Dallas' 2025 outlook. The front office likely sealed its fate when trading Parsons, a decision that, while giving the team money to extend Smith, cornerback DaRon Bland and tight end Tyler Ferguson, severely compromised its pass rush.
The Cowboys may have learned a valuable lesson from that situation. Instead of making things complicated, it's much preferable to simply pay one's best players. If only it didn't take so long.
