Commanders have reason to regret Brian Robinson Jr. trade after losing All-Pro

The Washington Commanders suffered a big injury blow during their 27-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.

Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, running back Austin Ekeler has been ruled out for the season after suffering a torn Achilles. The Commanders plan to use rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt as Ekeler's replacement.

"Commanders RB Austin Ekeler has, in fact, torn his Achilles, the MRI confirmed," Rapoport posted on X. "He’s out for the 2025 season. Jacory Croskey-Merritt, known as Bill, now becomes the Commanders RB1, while Ekeler sets his eyes on recovery."

On his Instagram story, Ekeler thanked his fans for their support.

"Thank you all for the love and well wishes," Ekeler wrote. "I appreciate you all."

Ekeler rushed for 43 yards on 14 carries through the first two games of the season, including 17 yards against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. He ended his year with 38 yards receiving on five receptions.

The Commanders selected Croskey-Merritt in the seventh round of April's draft. He's rushed 14 times for 99 yards and a touchdown in his first two career games. The Arizona Wildcats standout has no receptions, something that made Ekeler dangerous in the Commanders backfield.

Will Washington Commanders regret trading Brian Robinson Jr.?

The Commanders traded Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers during the preseason. With Ekeler out for the rest of the season, Washington might regret trading Robinson so early before the trade deadline.

Robinson rushed nine times for 33 yards in his debut for the 49ers as Christian McCaffrey's backup in Week 1.

Ekeler wasn't the only Washington player who suffered a season-ending injury on Thursday night. The Commanders lost defensive end Deatrich Wise due to a quad injury.
