Brandon Aubrey's heroics vs. Giants shouldn't overshadow Cowboys' defensive issues

The Dallas Cowboys defense owes kicker Brandon Aubrey a nice dinner or two. If not for his clutch kicking, the unit would've helped lose Sunday's home game against the New York Giants.

Giants QB Russell Wilson shredded Dallas Cowboys

The defense was so awful that it made Wilson — who went 17-24 over his past three seasons with the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers — look like the player who won Super Bowl XLVIII with the Seattle Seahawks.

Wilson finished 30-of-41 passing for 450 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Dallas' 40-37 overtime victory. In New York's 21-6 Week 1 road loss to the Washington Commanders, the QB completed 17-of-37 passes for 168 yards.

Most of the Cowboys' issues stemmed from their inability to pressure Wilson. Dallas had just three sacks for a loss of 28 yards. The Cowboys clearly miss edge-rusher Micah Parsons, whom they traded to the Green Bay Packers just before the start of the season. Still, Dallas can't continue to use that as an excuse.

Dallas' offense and Aubrey made up for the defensive woes. The Cowboys generated 478 yards (343 passing, 135 rushing) against the Giants. The kicker, meanwhile, nailed two key field-goal attempts.

Aubrey, a former soccer player, showcased his big leg on a made 64-yard field goal at the end of regulation. In overtime, he drilled a winning 46-yard field goal.

That's good for the Cowboys that they have a kicker who has seemingly limitless range and a dynamic offense that has 785 yards through two games.

However, the team can't count on the offense and the kicker saving it every week. They couldn't do that in a 24-20 Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, when Dallas surrendered 302 yards. And they won't be able to do it against other Super Bowl contenders.

Dallas avoiding an embarrassing loss to the Giants is certainly a positive, but its defense must improve quickly. It'll face better QBs than Wilson later this season, and Aubrey's leg can't bail out the struggling unit each week.
