Thanks to their 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday's Super Bowl rematch, the Kansas City Chiefs are off to their first 0-2 start of the Patrick Mahomes era. It is also the first time that Mahomes has ever lost three games in a row as a pro quarterback if you go back to last year's Super Bowl.
All of that on its own is very concerning for the Chiefs. What's even more concerning is this does not look to be a fluke. This just looks like an extremely flawed team that has problems on both sides of the football.
On one hand, Mahomes has looked as mortal as he ever has in the NFL through the first two weeks of the 2025 season, and Sunday's game against the Eagles saw him have some truly bad misses in the passing game.
He finished the day 16-of-29 passing for 187 yards a touchdown and an interception, which are very pedestrian numbers for what the Chiefs are used to seeing from him. But while Mahomes has not played like himself, his supporting cast is a serious problem.
The offensive line has not performed well, while the wide receiver room and depth chart is a mess with Xavier Worthy injured and Rashee Rice suspended. The most concerning development on the offense, however, is that the usually reliable Travis Kelce is starting to show his age.
He turned a potential touchdown on Sunday into an interception in the end zone when he was unable to haul in a pass from Mahomes in a big moment in the fourth quarter.

At this point there is no easy fix for the Chiefs, especially as it relates to the offensive line. This is the group they have assembled, and right now it is struggling.
There is some hope the wide receiver room can get better when Worthy and Rice return, but it remains to be seen when Worthy will be back and Rice will still be sidelined for four more games. A trade might have to be on the table here.
The Chiefs made a habit the past two seasons out of winning close, one-score games and making no apologies for it. The common argument in their favor is that they are just a good team that knows how to win in crunch time. Which is certainly true — to an extent. There is still an element of luck in one-score games, and when you play a one-score game on a consistent basis sometimes that luck is going to run out and work against you.
In 2024 the Chiefs were 13-0 (including playoffs) in games that were decided by eight points or less. That includes a 5-0 record in games decided by three points or less. So far this season they are already 0-2 in games decided by eight points or less.
Whether it is a one score game or not, right now the Chiefs just looked a very flawed team that does not do any one thing particularly well. It is a problem.
