Rangers' Igor Shesterkin makes bold claim on New York's goal for next season

The New York Rangers are already preparing for the 2025-26 NHL season, and a key player on the team has a clear objective: the Stanley Cup, or nothing. New York goalie Igor Shesterkin stated during the Rangers' camp that only being crowned champion will be enough for him and for his team this upcoming season after the disappointing 2024-25 campaign.

"Stanley Cup (his expectation for the team). If you are a professional athlete, you need to always reach the best, and that should be your goal," Shesterkin said.

The hunger for victory on the part of the Rangers squad is evident, and it was to be expected after being left out of the playoffs last season. With a record of 27-29-5, 2.86 goals-against average and .905 save percentage, Shesterkin, 29, seeks to have another good year on an individual level again, but this time accompanied by collective achievements.

Igor Shesterkin fueled by ranking snub and Olympic break for Rangers' season

There is also another personal incentive that could motivate the Blueshirts goalie even more, and it is that this month, it was revealed that Shesterkin fell from the top in the ranking of best goalies according to the NHL Network. Surely the Russian will want to show what he is still capable of to himself, the press and his new coach, Mike Sullivan.

Shesterkin will enter this season in the first year of his new and massive eight-year contract, for a total value of $92 million, and he knows that there is no better time for a new and fresh start than this, considering the defensive improvements of the team and the hiring of a new coach.

Next February, the Russian goalie will have a prolonged rest, since Russia will not participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics. That will allow him not to be exposed to potential injuries, and he could benefit in the final stretch of the season and playoffs, hypothetically.
