First-year head coach Aaron Glenn is trying to stay positive after his New York Jets fell to 0-3 in a heartbreaking 29-27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Jets took a 27-26 lead via a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown with under two minutes to play in the fourth quarter. But a motivated Baker Mayfield led the Buccaneers on a drive that ended in a made field goal to give Tampa Bay a 3-0 start to the season.
Following the game, Glenn told the media that he plans to build on the good things the Jets did on Sunday and wasn't going to pay attention to the negative spin he predicts the New York media will pass off after the loss.
"There are a lot of games to play, and you can build on this," Glenn said via Rich Cimini of ESPN. "The one thing I don't do, which I understand the New York media tries to do, is the negative parts of it. I'm not going to be that way. I'm going to let you guys deal with that. We're going to look at the things that we did well, we're going to continue to push forward because we're going to improve."
The Jets lost a close contest in Week 1 when the Pittsburgh Steelers kicked a game-winning field goal with 1:03 left in the fourth quarter. New York was blown out, 30-10, by the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 when quarterback Justin Fields suffered a concussion.
The Jets competed with backup Tyrod Taylor against the Buccaneers, but ultimately came up short against a team that looks like an early contender to win the NFC South.
Despite going winless through his first three games, Glenn doesn't believe this team is the "same old Jets."
"We're not the same team as, like everyone says, [the] 'same old Jets,'" Glenn said. "These guys are going to fight no matter what the situation is. There's no give-up to them. I hate that term, and I really don't know what that term means, but I know this: They're not the 'same old Jets.' All right?"
New York has a chance to stave off that reputation in Week 4 when it travels to play the 0-3 Miami Dolphins on "Monday Night Football."
