ABS is not popular among the players

According to an article written by Jesse Rogers of ESPN in June 2024, “61% of team personnel (including players) and 47% of fans favor a challenge system, compared to 28% of team personnel and 30% of fans preferring to stick with the current no-technology system and just 11% and 23% wanting full ABS.” 

The ABS Challenge System was recently criticized by Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Walker Buehler, who called the system “inaccurate” when meeting with the media. He also added that he felt that veteran pitchers who put in their time deserved some calls on the plate. 

ABS will have an impact on the game moving forward 

With the implementation of ABS, baseball will never be the same, and teams will need to figure out how to gain a competitive advantage with the new rule.

The whole point of the ABS Challenge System will be to better hold the umpires accountable for the missed calls, which some players and fans have felt have gotten out of hand. This rule change comes on the heels of Major League Baseball shrinking the “buffer zone” of the strike zone earlier this season, which, according to The Athletic, was due to a collective bargaining agreement struck between the umpires' union and MLB.

The ABS Challenge system will bring many changes with it. Some good, like possibly more balls in play and accurate game calling, but there will also be its downsides, such as adding more time to games. Whatever the case, ABS is coming, and fans and players will soon find out the full extent of what they are in for heading into next season.
