One team seems like perfect fit for Russell Wilson after benching by Giants

The New York Giants have finally made what seemed to be an obvious decision after Week 1: They're shutting down Russell Wilson and rolling with Jaxson Dart.

Wilson struggled mightily in Weeks 1 and 3, and putting up 450 yards and 37 points against the 2025 Dallas Cowboys wasn't that impressive. If anything, he also cost them that game with a head-scratching interception.

Given his recent history, this should be the end of the line for him in the Big Apple. Even if the Giants want a veteran backup, they still have Jameis Winston.

Also, as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk just pointed out, Wilson could've made an additional $7.5 million with incentives, and that's not going to happen with the Giants. As such, he's got plenty of reasons to request a trade.

The Bengals could save Russell Wilson

"He has unlocked none of the incentives, and will earn not a penny beyond his base deal if he doesn’t play. He has an obvious financial incentive to try to go to a team where he will be on the field," wrote Florio.

With Joe Burrow set to miss most of -- if not all of -- the season and Wilson's ties to Cincinnati (he was born there), the Bengals look like a logical destination.

"Of the various quarterback injuries suffered through three weeks of the 2025 season, only one team has lost its starter for most (if not all) of the balance of the season: The Bengals. And Wilson was born in Cincinnati. That’s an obvious place for him to try to go," Florio added.

Granted, the Bengals' offensive line failed to protect Joe Burrow, so 2025 Russell Wilson might not fare much better.

Even so, this might be the best -- and only -- bet for both parties. Wilson should want to walk away on his own terms, and Zac Taylor needs someone to lead them to the playoffs and save his job.
