49ers already know Brock Purdy's status, but many questions remain

After missing the past two weeks due to a shoulder injury, the San Francisco 49ers will have starting quarterback Brock Purdy back in the lineup on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Purdy was limited in practice for most of the week, but he had no injury designation on Friday with head coach Kyle Shanahan announcing that Purdy will return.

49ers' injury issues still remain

While getting Purdy back in the lineup is a significant development, it's probably the only good piece of injury news the team has received lately, and it is still unknown who he will be throwing passes to when he returns.

Wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall are both listed as questionable for Sunday's game due to injuries, while superstar defensive lineman Nick Bosa is sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Injury issues have been a huge concern for the 49ers in recent years, and the 2025 season is shaping up to be no different.

Mac Jones filled in admirably for Purdy

Probably better than anybody could have expected. The 49ers went 2-0 in Purdy's absence (improving their overall record to 3-0), with backup Mac Jones throwing for 563 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in his two starts.

It's a testament to how good the supporting cast has been, and how well Shanahan is able to prepare an offense to maintain such a high level of play even without his starting quarterback.

It also helped to get games against the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals during that stretch. But the 49ers still had to take care of their business on the field, and they did.

Purdy's return comes at a big time in the 49ers schedule with upcoming games against Jacksonville, the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Those three teams are a combined 7-2 so far this season, and they have another tough game against a strong Atlanta Falcons defense looming the week after.
