The Philadelphia Eagles will have their work cut out for them when they travel to Tampa to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Temperatures will be in the 90s, with the real feel being close to 100.
The Eagles should be up to the challenge, though, after coming off their best win of the season, making a comeback in the second half to defeat the Los Angeles Rams, 33-26. The Birds' second-half comeback came on the back of quarterback Jalen Hurts, who had 226 yards with three touchdowns and completed 21 of his 32 passes for a 65.6% completion percentage.
According to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Dave Zangaro, Hurts didn’t shy away from giving first-year offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo a lion's share of the credit for the win, specifically for making the necessary adjustments after finding themselves down.
“We put ourselves in a position and we approached the game differently and you have games like that,” Hurts said. “I think as a unit, we found a way to get it going. And I give a lot of credit to KP (Kevin Patullo) in that. Give a lot of credit to KP in that. Being able to adjust and see and get us in the direction that we need to be.”
Patullo is Hurts' fifth offensive coordinator since joining the NFL. The Eagles also had two different head coaches during his tenure, Nick Sirianni and Doug Pederson, who were the primary play-callers before relinquishing those duties.
These offensive coordinator changes don’t seem to have affected Hurts, as evidenced by his performance in Super Bowl LIX, where he won the MVP award against the Kansas City Chiefs. He threw for 221 yards with two touchdowns and rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown.
This season, Hurts has completed 71.4% of his passes, while throwing for 479 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also has an impressive 117 yards rushing and four rushing touchdowns.
Under Patullo so far, the main criticism has been the lack of passing the ball, a part of the game which helped the Eagles win in the second half versus the Rams and will also be crucial when playing the Buccaneers, as they’re one of the top teams at stopping the run.
Even though some won’t admit it, Hurts is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. Although he's not someone who will throw the most yards or touchdowns, Hurts has proven he’s a good game manager and leader.
Hurts is a quarterback who can make plays with his arm and legs, making him a dual threat. The downside is he gets sacked more than most, having been sacked seven times already this season, according to StatMuse.
Even though that’s the case, Hurts makes big plays more often than he gets sacked, which is helping the Eagles win games. If Patullo and Hurts can get on the same page for the whole game against the Buccaneers like they did in the second half versus the Rams, the Eagles should be in a good spot to walk out of there with a 4-0 record.
