'MNF' takeways: Jets appear headed in wrong direction under first-year head coach

The Miami Dolphins moved into the win column on Monday.

Here are our takeaways from their 27-21 win on "Monday Night Football" over the division-rival New York Jets.

Key takeaway: Jets trending in wrong direction under Aaron Glenn

Pre-snap penalties, poor tackling and special teams blunders. We thought Glenn was supposed to fix the Jets, not tear them down expeditiously.

New York continues to beat itself, sustaining numerous self-inflicted wounds against Miami that ultimately led to its undoing. The Jets turned the ball over three times, committed 13 penalties for 101 yards and went 0-for-2 in the red zone. Returner Isaiah Williams, who lost a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half, also called for a fair catch on a punt at the Jets' 2-yard line, pinning New York deep on its own end.

ESPN's "Get Up" and "Sunday NFL Countdown" host Mike Greenberg, also a self-proclaimed Jets fan, ripped into Glenn on social media, saying the first-year head coach has "a crisis on his hands four games in.

"Team is sloppy, undisciplined, poorly prepared," Greenberg scathingly critiqued.

The Jets (0-4) have a quick turnaround, playing the Dallas Cowboys (1-2-1) on Sunday at home, followed by an overseas trip to London in Week 6, when they will play the Denver Broncos (1-2). A 0-6 start isn't out of the question for New York, which can't get out of its own way.

Game MVP: Dolphins tight end Darren Waller

The 2020 Pro Bowler had a memorable first game back after retiring last season, scoring touchdowns on two of his three receptions, including a remarkable grab at the back of the end zone on a 4th-and-goal to give Miami a 10-0 second-quarter lead.

Waller's final stat line wasn't gaudy, ending with just 27 receiving yards. But his red-zone production was a pleasant surprise for Miami, which is likely to be without star wideout Tyreek Hill (knee) for most of the season after he left the game in the third quarter. The Dolphins (1-3) need to know who they can trust the rest of the season, and Waller quickly proved himself to be a reliable option.

Quote of the game: "The young man is absolutely sensational ... Just give him a chance."

Free Garrett Wilson.

The fourth-year Jets wide receiver had one of the best touchdown catches of the season through Week 4, hauling in a late-fourth-quarter grab over Dolphins corner Rasul Douglas while blanketed in coverage. Wilson reached over Douglas to get the ball, then secured it as his left foot just barely landed inbounds.

After the catch, color commentator Dan Orlovsky praised Wilson, saying, "The young man is absolutely sensational.

"Just give him a chance," the former NFL quarterback added.

Wilson ended the game with six receptions, 82 yards and a touchdown on eight targets. As the unquestioned most dynamic Jets offensive playmaker, Wilson needs more looks during games to make the most of his incredible talent. Otherwise, New York's letting him go to waste.
