Giants QB Jaxson Dart is eager to show Saints what they missed out on

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart will make the second start of his NFL career on Sunday, and the rookie should have some added motivation heading into the contest.

Dart and the Giants are facing the New Orleans Saints on the road in Week 5. Leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, the Saints were viewed as a potential suitor for Dart. They had the No. 9 overall pick and decided to use it on Texas offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr. The Giants then traded up to 25th overall and took Dart. New Orleans drafted former Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round.

Had the Saints viewed Dart as a franchise quarterback, they would have drafted him in the first round. Dart was asked on Wednesday if that will be on his focus on Sunday when he faces New Orleans.

"I think there's always a chip on your shoulder anytime something like that happens. But, yeah, I'm just gonna go out there and play as hard as I can," Dart said. "I feel like my (pre-draft) visit with them went good. You kind of have thoughts in your head during the draft of what options are really realistic, and I definitely feel like that was a place that could have panned out, but things didn't work out that way."

The Saints have yet to see what they have in Shough

It is far too early to tell whether the Saints made the right call by passing on Dart. Spencer Rattler has started all four games for New Orleans this year with Shough serving as his backup. Rattler has been decent, if not uninspiring, throwing for 765 yards, five touchdowns and an interception on the season. However, the Saints are 0-4.

It's unclear if Shough will play at all this season, so the comparison between him and Dart may have to wait until 2026 at the earliest.

Dart is looking to build off a solid debut

Dart led the Giants to their first win of the season in Week 4. He completed 13-of-20 passes for 111 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions in a 21-18 upset win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Dart also rushed for 54 yards and a score.

Though the Chargers are a far better team than the Saints, things might be more difficult for Dart in his second NFL start. Malik Nabers is out for the season after tearing his ACL, which will likely be a major blow to the Giants' offense. Perhaps the desire to show the Saints what they missed out on will help Dart offset the loss of a Pro Bowl wideout.
