49ers get more disappointing Brock Purdy injury news

After missing two of the San Francisco 49ers' first four games, starting quarterback Brock Purdy missed Thursday's NFC West tilt against the Los Angeles Rams. He might be out for even more games after that.

Brock Purdy suffers "setback" with turf toe injury

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Purdy suffered some sort of a setback with his turf toe injury in Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and is now considered to be out on a week-to-week basis.

That means he could miss significant playing time beyond this week and leave the 49ers offense in the hands of backup Mac Jones for the foreseeable future.

Purdy played in the 49ers' season-opening win against the Seattle Seahawks and this past week's loss to Jacksonville, but he missed the two games in between against the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals (both wins). When he's been in the lineup, he's thrown for 586 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.

The 49ers just signed him to a five-year, $265 million contract extension this past offseason to make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

What might be surprising is that Jones, his backup, had produced nearly identical numbers in his two starts this season before the "TNF" matchup (563 yards and four touchdowns) while throwing fewer interceptions (only one). (On Thursday night, Jones went 33-of-49 for342 yards, two touchdowns and zero picks.)

That doesn't mean Jones is as good as Purdy, but it's a testament to how well the backup has played and how good head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense can be for quarterbacks.

49ers injuries becoming big issue on offense

The 49ers have been hard by injuries early in the season, and Purdy is just one of the biggest. Going into Thursday's game against the Rams, the 49ers were down several starters, including wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall to go along with Purdy. That didn't stop them from taking down their divisional foe in overtime, 26-23.
