Which side won the Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga stalemate?

The long stalemate between the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga is over. The two sides finally agreed on a contract extension before the season started.

Why Jonathan Kuminga and Warriors won with this deal

The art of a good negotiation ends when both parties feel like they leave a little on the table in terms of their wants and needs, ultimately compromising to reach a deal.

Kuminga secures his lucrative multiyear contract, but the Warriors secure the deal they wanted, including a tantalizing first-year salary slot and a team option. They never budged on the team option and got what they wanted in the end.

Mike Dunleavy Jr., general manager for the Warriors, really likes the deal for both parties.

It's a good deal for both parties because Kuminga gets more money up front in his first year, with the ability to test free agency quicker than a three-year deal. The organization gets a contract that will be attractive to another team if they look to trade the young forward. According to Shams Charania, NBA insider for ESPN, both parties understand the likelihood of this relationship ending in a trade.

There has been a lot of speculation that a split between the two sides is imminent, and it can become a reality starting mid-January. The significance of the organization not budging on the team option is that they could gain a better return in a trade.

Teams prefer a contract with a team option instead of a player option. A team option gives the organization control over a player's future, compared to a player option, which gives the player all the control over their future.

Jonathan Kuminga wants a fresh start with Warriors

After a summer in limbo for Kuminga and his representation, he has finally spoken about his first negotiation process. He will make some changes this upcoming season, starting with a new number.

It’s been four years, and it seems like he is growing tired of his role and his situation with the organization, and it does not look like the relationship between the two parties is salvageable.  The number change suggests that he needed a win in the worst way, giving him a portion of control he seems to desperately crave.
